New Yorker

1½ oz. blended whiskey
½ oz. lime juice
1 tsp. sugar syrup* or to taste
Dash grenadine
Lime peel
Orange peel

Mix all ingredients, except lime peel, with cracked ice in a shaker or blender. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass and twist lime peel over drink and drop in.

*To Make Sugar Syrup: In a saucepan, gradually stir one lb. granulated sugar into 13 oz. hot water to make 16 oz. sugar syrup. Granulate sugar does not dissolve easily in cold drinks, but this simple syrup, being liquid, is the perfect alternative.
