A. The distilling
industry directly and indirectly generated $2.6 billion worth
of economic activity (Conference Board of Canada: January 1996).

many people are employed by the Canadian distilling industry?
A. The distilled
spirits industry provides direct and indirect employment of over
15,700 Canadians (Conference Board of Canada: January, 1996).
Q. How
many 9 Litre cases (which is equivalent to 12 x 750ml bottles)
of spirits are sold in Canada?
A. In 1998
13,527,422 (9) litre cases (121.7 million litres) were sold in Canada. Domestically produced
distilled spirits sales totaled 9,522,417 (9) litre cases (85.7
million litres) with imported sales totaling 4,005,005 (9) litre
cases (36.1 million litres).
Q. How
much tax revenue does the federal and provincial governments collect
from the sale of distilled spirits?
A. In 1996,
the federal government collected $679 million in tax revenue on
distilled spirits all across Canada. (This includes excise duty,
import duty and Goods and Services Tax). During the same year,
provincial governments across Canada collected more than 1.8 billion
in tax revenue. (Includes markups, miscellaneous levies and retail
sales taxes).
Q. How
many different spirit products are sold in Canada?
A. Currently,
there are 538 domestic spirit brands and 2,105 imported distilled
spirit brands available to consumers in Canada. The number of
brands fluctuates on a regular basis as new brands are continuous
being introduced into the market.
Q. How
much Canadian grain and corn does the distilling industry purchase?
A. In 1996,
our members purchased approximately $43,317,600 worth of Canadian
corn and $2,965,000 of other Canadian grains. This equals to approximately
234,149.19 metric tonnes of Canadian corn and 16,942.87 tonnes
of other Canadian grains purchased in 1996.
Q. What
is the most popular distilled spirit product category in Canada?
A. Canadian
Whisky is the number one selling product category. In 1998, 3,671,512
(9) litre cases were sold in Canada.
