On June 27, 1947, the then Chairman of the Canadian Association of Provincial Liquor Commissioners (CAPLC) Mr. W.F. Kennedy (Chairman of B.C. Liquor Control Commission) wrote to Mr. T.G. Fogden, General Manager of W. & A.Gilbey Ltd. Toronto, Ontario suggesting that the Canadian distillers form a Trade Association because it would be extremely valuable in dealing with the Liquor Boards and in handling problems throughout Canada.

Mr. David Sim who was Deputy Minister of Customs and Excise, Department of National Revenue at the time strongly recommended the formation of a Trade Association.

Mr. Fogden called upon every distiller in July 1947 to discuss the suggestion put forward. The distillers involved in the discussions were:

  • Booth Distillers Ltd
  • Canadian Schenley Ltd.
  • Corby Distillery Ltd
  • Distillers - Corporation - Seagrams
  • Erven Lucas Bols
  • Gooderham & Worts Ltd.
  • Hiram Walker & Sons
  • John dekuyper & Sons
  • L.J. McGuinness & Co.
  • Meagher Bros. & Co. Ltd.
  • Melchers Distilleries Ltd.
  • Montmorency Distillery Ltd.
  • United Distillers
  • W. & A. Gilbey Ltd.

Due to the efforts of Mr. Fogden a Provincial Advisory Committee was formed and the first meeting took place in Ottawa on August 17, 1947. As a result of this and subsequent meetings the Association of Canadian Distillers came into being with all the distillers as members. Mr. Fogden became the first President.
